Blogs
Need a blog? This service is free for state agencies. Departmental, cross-department, and external-partnership blogs, all running on the Wordpress platform. It is all about you "engaging" your constituents. A single logon enables you to potentially participate on any blog hosted by this same service.
What is a Blog?
Blogs are websites where regular entries are made (such as in a journal or a diary) and presented in reverse chronological order. Blogs often offer commentary or news on a particular subject, such as technology, politics, or local news; some function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. Most blogs are primarily textual although many focus on photographs, videos, or audio.
Some blogs are very focused on the personal writing of the author. Others take an editorial approach, as editors search the Web looking for interesting content. On their blogs, they may then write up a short comment and link to this content. Others use blogs as a collaborative tool among a defined group of people who work together on a specific product or issue. Read more about blogs on Wikipedia.org.
Another form of blogging is the microblog. As its name suggests, microblogging is simply writing extremely short blog posts in the vein of text messaging. The messages can either be viewed by anyone or by a restricted group that is chosen by the user.
Blog Services
The eServices Office provides a free blog service to agencies which runs on WordPress. The service is hosted at the Office of Information Technology Services. It is available to any state agency or department. You can customize your blog with your own logo, look-and-feel, and ca.gov domain.
WUGShare.ca.gov leverages the statewide blog service. It allows users to create an account, upload a profile picture, start discussions, embed relevant videos, maps or widgets, and make comments. The blog also notifies users of new posts through email or feeds.
To be a blogger/contributor on WUGShare, you must be an employee of some California governmental related agency. But anyone can join in on the conversation and engage the WUG community by leaving their opinions and ideas via comments on the various blog posts.
