State of California Web Accessibility Standards

Formed under the direction of the State of California CIO's Office, the Information Organization, Usability, Currency, and Accessibility (IOUCA) Working Group, along with Department of Rehabilitation recommended these accessibility standards for California:

  1. Compliance with California Government Code 11135 including Federal Rehabilitation Act Section 508.
  2. Priority 1 and 2 level checkpoints of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 (WCAG 1.0 “AA” Conformance Level) development by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
  3. And five recommended best practices from the California Department of Rehabilitation based upon its work with Section 508, WCAG, and the communities serving persons with disabilities.

The above standards were adopted on June 16, 2006 by the Portal Review Board, and July 14, 2006 by the Portal Steering Committee, and are to be used for planning new and redesigned state websites. Download California's Website Accessibility Standards.

State web developers should continuously validate their agency's web pages for accessibility pursuant to the above standards. This website provides information on how to keep your website accessible when adding or modifying content.
